Margaret Cobbe

On Sunday July 13, 2008, at the Portage District Hospital, Margaret Cobbe, a long time resident of Portage la Prairie passed away at the age of 73 years old.

Prayers will be held in the Chapel of the Omega Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at 7:00 PM.

Funeral service will be held at the Good Shepherds Roman Catholic Church on Thursday July 17 at 1:30 with Father Eric Giddins officiating.

Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery.

Born in Portage General Hospital on November 21, 1934 to John Wesley Matthews, born Durham, Ontario and Frances (Snyder) Matthews, born Morrisburg, Ontario, Margaret was raised on the family farm in Bagot, Manitoba outside of Portage la Prairie. She received her schooling at the Image Creek School, travelling on foot or by buggy in the summer and cutter in the winter. She attended St. Mary’s in Winnipeg but was always home sick for the farm.

Margaret worked as a switchboard operator in MacGregor in the early 1950’s where she met Garry Cobbe. Married in 1956, the couple moved to Portage la Prairie in 1962 raising their family and working together at Cobbe’s Plumbing and Heating until Garry’s untimely death in 1998. Margaret enjoyed curling and golf and was a sports mother and grandma cheering countless hockey, ball and soccer games as well as music recitals and concerts. She enjoyed family camping trips and vacation travel over the years. She took great pleasure in the accomplishments of all of her children and grandchildren. “Bessie” was a devoted grandmother with a wonderfully kind heart.

Predeceased by Garry, her parents and brother Sterling and nieces Trish (Matthews) McIvor and Sharon (Nott) Denton , she leaves to cherish her memory, son Kelly (Sherry), grandchildren: Brendan, Caity, Brianna of Waterloo; daughter Jackie Hargreaves, grandchildren: Nolan, Erika, Sierra of Winnipeg; daughter Jodie (Charles) Dallyn, grandchildren: Tyson, Bailey of Portage la Prairie. Also surviving are: sister Elizabeth of Red Deer; brother Ted (Isabelle) of Portage la Prairie; sister-in-law Doreen Cobbe; sister-in-law Glenna Cobbe of Dauphin and extended friends and family.
