Evelyn Lily Gabriel
On Sunday, May 9th, 2010 at the Grace Hospital, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Evelyn Lily Gabriel of Portage la Prairie, widow of the late Herbert Gabriel passed away at the age of 87 years.
Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel of the Omega Funeral Home, Friday, May 14, 2010 at 1:30 PM.
Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
Evelyn was born on June 6, 1922, daughter of Horace and Gladys McKinstry at Poplar Point, where she was raised and received her education. She entered Normal School in Winnipeg graduating in 1943 and she then taught at the Belcourt and Poplar Point Schools. In 1946 she married Herb Gabriel and they farmed together until their retirement in 1978. Herb & Evelyn continued to reside on the farm at Poplar Point until 1999 when they moved into Portage la Prairie.
Evelyn was a member of the Alliance Poplar Point Church. In addition to raising her family and helping out on the farm she was active in the Poplar Point community. She enjoyed curling, playing ball, teaching 4H and served as secretary treasurer for the Alliance Women. After her children started high school, she returned to teaching in 1970. She then taught at the Woodland Colony until 1977. After her retirement she enjoyed knitting and sewing and her special times were spent with her family preparing the holiday meals.
Evelyn was predeceased by her husband Herb and her sister Audrey Mulligan. She leaves to mourn her passing her two sons: Brian (Jill), two grandchildren Lisa and Derek of North Vancouver, Brent (Darlene) and grandson, Jay of Winnipeg, one daughter Lorraine Gabriel of Winnipeg. Also surviving are one brother Lorne (Muriel) McKinstry of St. Albert, Alberta, sister Phyllis Giercke of Portage and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
