“What is the value of a funeral service?”

We often hear people saying that they don’t want anyone to fuss over them when they are gone. It is not a fuss. Funerals are for the living, not the dead.

So what is a funeral service?

A funeral service is defined as “the ceremony of burying a dead body, or the services that take place at such a time.” People use different terms to describe it, a memorial service, a celebration of life, these are all types of funeral services. The funeral service celebrates a life lived and gives family and friends a time to remember, and share stories. At the service family often place pictures, memorabilia, a person’s favorite hat, etc, and this helps to remember your loved one in that special way.

The funeral service is also an integral part of the grieving process and it gives family and friends a time to come to terms and understand that a death has occurred. Without this time families tend to have difficulties dealing with the grieving process. Everyone grieves differently, and there is no set time for this to take.

So the next time you hear someone say they don’t want a funeral service, be understanding, but also let them know that people care and it is the family and friends left behind that need the funeral service.
