Della “Grannie” Smith
Peacefully with family at her side, on Thursday, May 27, 2010 at the Portage District General Hospital, Della Smith of Portage la Prairie, widow of the late Donald Smith, passed away at the age of 86 years.
Funeral service will be held in the Trinity United Church on Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at 1:30 PM with Marg Scott & Reverend Julie Baker officiating.
Interment will take place in Woodlands Cemetery, Treherne, MB at 4:30 PM.
Grannie was born on October 31, 1923 daughter of Annie and Percy Nesbitt at Treherne, MB. She was raised and received her education in the Arbroath district. In 1940 she married Laurie Smith and they started their family living in Treherne. On December 16, 1950 she was predeceased by Laurie. On June 9, 1956 she married Donald Smith and they lived in Treherne, then Fleming, Sask, then they moved to Portage in 1961, where they have since resided. Grannie enjoyed knitting, watching Y & R (Young and Restless) and sports on TV, bowling, reading, solitaire, and babysitting children (over 100 in Portage).
Predeceased by her husbands, Laurie in 1950 and Donald in 2002; son-in-law Wayne Wilson; granddaughter Kimberly Dawn; six brothers, Ambrose, Ernie, Mel, Ivan, Stan and Palmer; three sisters Bonnie Belle, Edna and Fern. She leaves to mourn her passing her children Bob (Pat) Smith, Marilyn (Jack) Thomson, Diane Wilson (Dell Cline), Bonnie (Larry) Austin, David (Linda) Smith, Judy (Doug) Peacock, Jim “Crow” (Carmen) Smith, Lorraine (George) Nelson, Glenda “Smitty” Smith (Stan Radomski); grandchildren, Laurie, Jackie, Jodi, Kendra, Cam, Jeff, Leanne, Chris, Ryan, Robyn, Brent, Brad, Riley and Kelsy; 16 great grandchildren, and her constant and faithful companion, Shea. Also surviving is one brother Joe and one sister Louella, and several nieces and nephews and extended family.
