MY TRIBUTE TO GERRY SAUMURE BY HIS WIFE, NITA MAE
Gerry (Gerard R.) Saumure, 89 years, passed away peacefully at Lions Personal Care Centre, Winnipeg, on Monday June 12, 2017.
He is survived by his wife Nita and sons, Gary Saumure and Darryl Young, Darryl’s son Ryan Alexander; sister Laurence; grandchildren and greatgrandchildren;nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter Marlin, brothers, Conrad and Honorad, and sister Clemence.
Gerry was born in Montcerf, Quebec. He worked in logging camps as a boy in order to help support his family. As a teenager, Gerry worked in the mines at Val d’Or, Quebec. When he was 17, he came West with a friend and worked on farms in Saskatchewan and mines in Yellowknife.
Gerry met his wife, Nita, in Portage la Prairie in 1969 and they were married on June 22, 1973.
Gerry served 35 years in the Canadian Air Force with four of those years in Germany. He also spent 10 years as a civilian employee for the military. Gerry was very patriotic and proud of his years of service to Canada, receiving several medals for his contributions. He was very fond of Germany and it made him so happy to be able to greet people in German, guten morgan (hello) and auf wiedersehen (goodbye). His favourite song was Lili Marleen which he could sing himself in German.
Gerry was very brave, a self-taught man, selfless and kind to all. Gerry was a great cook and although he didn’t enjoy going to restaurants, he would go just to make me happy. He loved researching his family tree and spent countless hours at libraries and on his computer. Gerry liked to golf, but his true passion was gardening and creating beautiful flower gardens each year.
A graveside service will be held at Hillside Cemetery, Portage la Prairie on Tuesday, June 20, 2017, at 2:00 pm. Omega Funeral Home, Portage la Prairie in charge of arrangements. A memorial service for Gerry will be held at Lions Personal Care Centre, Winnipeg, at a future date.
