May Dorine (Gray) McCallister

June 26, 1916 ~ July 16, 2016 (age 100) 100 Years Old

May Dorine McCallister (nee Gray)

May passed away three weeks after celebrating her 100th Birthday! She was born June 26, 1916 to William and Margaret Gray on the family farm at West Prospect. Predeceased by her husband Cecil (1999), siblings Willie (Annie) Gray, Annie (Bert) Sturgeon, Jean (Walter) Thomson, Bessie (Vern) Davies, she is survived by her children Basil (Diane), Irvin (Judy) and Lorne (Maureen) McCallister, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and countless other family and friends.

May was raised and attended school in the area, until her wedding Jan 6, 1939 when they moved to the farm north of Portage. She raised her family, farmed and was a active member of the community, part of which was as a Nursing Sister, teaching and volunteering with the St. John’s Ambulance. She was also very well known for loving all of her animals.

Farm life was both challenging and rewarding. For enjoyment they participated in many hours of dancing, bowling and socials in the community. In the late sixties they decided to travel to new and exotic parts of the world, going to Japan, Australia and Africa to name a few. In 1980 they retired into Portage, where you would still find her volunteering.

In 2003 she moved into a apartment, still driving she was in charge of transportation of friends and family to all of the current social gatherings.

Late 2009, she was moved to the Lions Manor where she resided until her death. She enjoyed her time there participating in all of the activities, including “Chillie” the cat.

She felt that her job was to be a good wife and mother, she did the job well and has always been the glue that held her family together.
