Alice Mayor
Alice Mayor (nee Lubkey), formerly of Portage la Prairie and Amaranth, Manitoba, age 102, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2018, in Winnipeg.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 9, 2018, at 1:30 pm at the Omega Funeral Home in Portage la Prairie with Reverend John Zondag of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery.
Alice was born in Portage la Prairie on February 8, 1915. At an early age, her family moved to Amaranth, where she received her education. In 1935, she married Alfred Mayor and returned to Portage. She was employed at Narvey’s Department Store for 10 years and then Safeway for 13 years before she retired in 1980. Her passion was singing and dancing and she loved to sing the old songs, such as Show Me the Way to Go Home, with her grandchildren when they visited. After her retirement, she became actively involved at the Herman Prior Senior Services Centre and sang with the Senior Choir. Alice had a strong desire to help others and so she established a Bursary Fund in her name for Portage La Prairie high school students studying in visual or performing arts. Her favourite charities included the Children’s Wish Foundation and the Children of Africa.
Alice is predeceased by her parents, John and Agnes, husband Alfred and siblings Mae, Betty and Nicholas. Left to cherish her memory are her son Garry (Marj), her grandson Jeff (Janet), her beloved grandsons Matthew and Nicholas, and nieces Gwen (Gary) and Velma.
The family of Alice wish to extend our sincere thanks to the staff of Golden West Centennial Lodge and to the First Presbyterian Church where Alice worshipped. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Children’s Wish Foundation – Manitoba Chapter.
