Benjamin Monkman Obituary

Benjamin (Benny) Joeseph Monkman

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Benny Monkman on March 31st, 2018 at Portage la Prairie, MB with his father Lawrence and brother Wayne at his side.

Benny was born January 3, 1962 in Ericksdale, MB to Lawrence and Grace Monkman.  He resided for many years at the Manitoba Development Centre in Maple Grove and East Grove Cottages.

Benny was known to staff at the MDC as a lovable, quiet person.  He enjoyed sitting with his many friends listening and participating in many activities that were offered there.  He especially enjoyed one on one time that he received from the nurses and staff.  Benny felt most comfortable to sit alone and observe everything around him.  He would sit curled up with his legs crossed rocking himself back and forth.  Benny spent many summers at Sandy Haven Campground in St. Laurent, MB where he enjoyed many activities such as swimming, beach activities and nature walks.  He very much enjoyed the outdoors.

During his visits with his brother Wayne, Benny would sit holding his hand often happily telling stories.  At times he would take Wayne by the hand and walk to different spots where he liked to sit.  Benny also enjoyed music and loved sneaking outside which he thought was amusing.  His squeaky toys were his favourite.

Benny leaves to mourn his passing his father Lawrence, his brothers; Peter (Helen), Paul (Carol), Hector (Pauline), Edward (Joyce), Elvis (Julie) and Wayne.  His sisters Thelma and Doreen and his sisters-in-law Donna and Alice.  He also leaves many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews and several cousins.

Benny was predeceased by his mother Grace, who is now walking hand and hand with him in Gods beautiful garden of everlasting life.  He was also predeceased by his brother Elmer and brother-in-law Ron Dejarlais.

The family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to the nurses and staff at the Manitoba Development Centre for the loving and quality care given to Benny throughout the years.  They are his extended family and it was their dedication, love and patience that enabled Benny to enjoy a wonderful life.  Also, a big thank you to his brother Wayne for looking after him throughout his life.

Funeral service will be held on Friday, April 6, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at the Aspen Centre at the Manitoba Developmental Centre, Portage la Prairie, MB.

In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Benny can be made to the Manitoba Developmental Centre, 840 – 3rd St. NE, Portage la Prairie, MB, R1N 3C6.
