Edward Douglas Roland Smart
Peacefully, after a valiant battle with cancer, Ed passed away September 27, 2018 at the Portage District General Hospital at the age of 61.
Ed was born June 8th, 1957, the son of Helen (nee Tomiuk) and Roland Smart. He received his education in Portage la Prairie. Following Grade 11 at Arthur Meighan High School, Ed ventured out into the work world being employed at several different jobs through his life. Manitoba Pool Elevators; Campbell Soup Plant; the Mushroom Plant; Henry Kuhl Farms and Laramee Enterprises. He was a jack of all trades and mechanically inclined.
Ed enjoyed fishing, hunting and snowmobiling with the boys. He also loved spending time in his garage putting his creative talents to task by designing and welding together wrought iron railing for stairways. Ed never married but his Black Labs - Lucy and Dutchie were his family. He enjoyed the company of his great nieces and nephews and loved sharing stories of his past as a young boy.
He was predeceased by his dad, Roland Smart in 1997 and brother-in-law Jack Hart in 2016. Ed will be fondly remembered by his mother Helen (nee Tomiuk), sisters; Elizabeth (George) Paton, Barbara Hart and Gloria Smart. Nieces and nephews Kimberly and Brent Paton; Jennifer (Kevin) Enns; Patti Hart (Ryan); Jacqueline (Chris) Bellisle, Pam (Clayton) Myhill, Jonathan McDonald and Andrea (Chris) Wallace, great nieces and nephews; Hayley Enns (Shaun), Nathan, Zachary and Joshua Enns, Russell and Sarah Buchanan, Lily and Mason Carlson, Ayden and Myles Willerton, Ryan and Harley Bellisle, Brianna and Coleton Myhill, Kaylyn, Corwin, Alston and Derrick Wallace, great great nieces Avery and Nora. His extended family includes Auntie Verna and Uncle Andy, Auntie Charlotte and Aunt Gail along with numerous cousins and friends.
As per Ed’s final wishes there will be no funeral. Cremation has taken place. Internment to be at Evergreen Memorial Gardens. We wish to extend a sincere thank you and our appreciation to the doctors, nurses and support staff at the Portage District General Hospital and the Cancer Care Unit for the excellent care and compassion that became a part of his journey.
