Virginia Miller Obituary

FJOLA VIRGINIA MILLER

Drew, Leigh and Ross Miller sadly announce the passing of their mother, Fjola Virginia Miller, on August 7, 2018, at the Lions Prairie Manor, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba.

Virginia was born on January 24, 1930, to Frank and Elizabeth Polson in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Growing up she lived in several cities across Canada with her family. Ultimately, they ended up in Vancouver where she graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1950, with a Bachelor of Arts Degree.

During this time in Vancouver, Virginia met Clive Miller, a Manitoba boy busy earning his law degree at UBC. They married on April 30, 1954 and began married life in Vancouver, soon adding four children to make the family complete.  In September of 1962, Virginia and Clive moved the family to Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, where Clive joined the family law practice and where Virginia was happy to bring up her children and become an active participant in the community.

Virginia was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church, as well as an active member and volunteer for many church groups and committees.  She served on the boards of the United Way and the Portage and District Music and Arts Festival organizations, for several years. Most notably, Virginia served on the Board of the Society of Manitobans with Disabilities from 1972 – 1980 – the last two years serving as President.

Virginia was an avid reader, theatre and concert goer, and appreciated music and the arts, greatly. If any of her children were playing or competing in a sporting event, or involved in a recital, she was always there to cheer them on. She dearly loved her cottage at Delta Beach and spent as much time there, as possible – enjoying the sun, summer, entertaining and family.

Virginia was predeceased by her son, Calvert in 2004 and her husband, Clive, in 2008. She is survived by her sister, Beverley O’Brien, son Drew (Allyson), her daughter Leigh, and son Ross (Linda) and daughter-in-law Yvonne.  Also surviving Virginia are grandchildren – Delaney, Jordan, Grant, Kara, Alanna, Alexandra, Charles, Alice, James and great-granddaughter, Danica.

A funeral service to remember Virginia will be held on Wednesday, August 15th, 2018 at 2:00 pm, at St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Portage la Prairie. The Reverend John Dolloff will officiate.  Reception will follow in the St. Mary's Church hall.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Community Foundation of Portage in Virginia’s name at 206 Sask. Ave. E., Portage la Prairie, MB  R1N 0K9.
