Amy Irene Hammond
Amy Irene Hammond, aged 93, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Born in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan on October 22, 1926, Amy was predeceased by her husband Edward Hammond, and her daughter Laurel Lee Hammond-Tyler. She was also predeceased by her parents; Mark and Emily Mealey, her brother Richard (Dick) Mealey and sisters Alice Oliver and Dorothy Burton.
Amy is survived by her brother Tom (Velma) Mealey, her two sons; Barry (Gladys) and Byron (Sherry) Hammond; as well as son-in-law Bob Tyler, seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
Amy grew up on a small farm near Lone Rock, Saskatchewan during the Great Depression.
After high school, she went to teacher’s college and taught at a number of one-room schools in the Lloydminster area.
In 1951, she married Edward Hiram Hammond. Because of Ed’s roles as a social worker and pastor, the couple lived in nine different towns and cities across western Canada and the U.S.
In 1966, she and her family moved to Portage la Prairie, where she was an elementary school teacher for 17 years.
After her retirement in 1983, she took an interest in a variety of activities. In addition to being an avid gardener, she spent several years involved with provincial and federal political parties, volunteered at her church, and cared for her grand-kids with love.
Throughout her life, Amy’s cheerful and positive attitude was infectious to all who met her. Her love of God was central to all that she did and greatly influenced her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Her children are very grateful to everyone at Lindenwood Terrace—her home for the last 6 years. The staff’s love, care, and kindness for our mum was greatly appreciated.
To the healthcare workers at Grace Hospital: Thank you so much for making Amy feel loved and comfortable over the last few days of her life.
In the next few weeks, the family will be holding a private celebration of her life. In the spring of 2021, a public celebration will be held in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba.
