Donald Clare Wood
Born on the farm at Oakville, MB on January 26th, 1926, Dad peacefully slipped away at Douglas Campbell Lodge on Saturday evening February 15th, 2020 at the age of 94. Dad is survived by his wife Loretta, daughter Lynda and son Bob, sister Grace Tully along with several nieces and nephews. Don was predeceased by his parents Wilbert & Enda and his brothers Garnet and Ray.
Dad attended Elm River and Oakville School and one year of agriculture at the University of Manitoba. Don and Loretta (nee Sherritt) were married on August 18th, 1951. He worked for Len Harris, wiring rural properties for several years when the hydro came through. Don also worked at the Oakville Locker Plant as a butcher for several years, then spent the next 51 years farming. Don also worked for Manitoba Crop Insurance as an adjuster and for Isoboard in Elie inspecting fields for weeds.
Dad and Mom enjoyed several winter bus trips with Can-Am Holidays and Fehr Way Tours seeing most of Canada and the US, including Alaska. Several winter holidays were spent driving to Messa, Arizona for a few weeks with there good friends Bob & Eva Miller and Ken & Melba Bartlett.
In December 2010 Dad & Mom moved from the farm at Oakville to Queen’s Court in Portage la Prairie. By this time dementia had started to hinder dad’s mental and later physical abilities which became totally devasting. Thus, the last few years have been pretty rough. Fortunately, his struggle is over and he is now at peace.
