November 12, 1932 ~ November 8, 2016 (age 83) 83 Years Old

Einar Bruno Ernst Smedegaard

Peacefully on Tuesday November 8, 2016, Einar Bruno Ernst Smedegaard passed away at the Portage District General Hospital after a long battle with cancer.

Einar was born in Berwyn Alberta November 12 1932, son of Otto and Astrid Smedegaard.

He joined the RCAF at the age of 19 in October of 1951. He married Joyce Louise Moy in 1957. They had three children. Together they traveled from British Columbia to Ontario and had a posting in Oslo Norway. Their final posting was to Portage La Prairie. Einar retired from the Air Force in 1972 and at the age of 40 took up a new career as a Court Reporter with the Province of Manitoba. Wherever Einar lived he seemed to gather good friends, with a great sense of fun. He was a dancing man and loved a good party. He and Joyce enjoyed the group of neighbours on Queen Street. The fiddle parties in the adjoining backyards that had few fences included the Chesney, the Muirhead, the McDougall and the Sing families. In later years he had many cherished and kind friends at the Duchess Apartment block.

Dad was a quiet and private man. He was caring and kind, patient and tolerant. He was bound to be as independent as possible, despite his long illness. We miss him for his superior knowledge of all things curling, of all things organized and all things gentle and loving.

Einar is predeceased by his parents, his wife Joyce (1983), his son Eric (1996). He leaves to mourn his passing, daughter Karen Clark (John), grandson: Ian (Baillie), granddaughter Kirsten (Adam), son Brian Smedegaard (Kim), grandsons: Bryn (Amanda) and Neal.

Thank you to Dr. Kinnear for the respectful considerate medical care he gave Einar.

Thank you to Dr. Lewis in Emergency and to the nurses who made Dad’s final hours so comfortable.

As per Dad’s wishes there will be a graveside interment at the Hillside Cemetery at a later date.

If so desired donations can be made in Einar’s name to CancerCare Manitoba, or a charity of one’s choice.
