Elaine Wilma “Billie” Borland
Peacefully, in her own home as she wished and surrounded by love, Elaine Borland, beloved wife of Ian Borland, passed away on Thursday, April 1st, 2021 at the age of 95 years.
She will be lovingly remembered by her husband Ian, children; Lorne (Kathy), Doug (Donna), daughter-in-law Brenda, 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son David.
Mom was born in Burnaby, BC and lost both parents at an early age. She grew up in numerous foster homes until she was 18 years of age and then moved to Ottawa and joined the Canadian Forces. After the war, she was off to Regina, Saskatchewan and discovered two things: Rider Football and a good-looking salesman named Ian.
In 1965, they emigrated to Portage la Prairie and a year later Western Bearing & Auto Parts was born. You could always find “Billie” there until her retirement at age 90.
During the late 60’s, Mom began fostering a number of Indigenous girls from the Residential School in Portage la Prairie. She treated them like her own daughters! A bond grew! Dianne, Lorraine and Mary Jane continued to stay in contact and visit Mom after 50 years. She was so proud of them.
Mom loved her home and yard. Wildlife was abundant whether it was songbirds, hummingbirds, squirrels or wild turkeys. They would greet her at the kitchen window looking for breakfast.
A few days before her passing, Mom woke up from a nap and asked “How did the Riders do last night?” True Rider Nation!
The family would like to thank Quinn Borland for her devoted time as care giver to Mom & Dad over the last year which was not an easy task through a pandemic.
In lieu of flowers, donations would be gratefully accepted at the Salvation Army, 200 Duke Avenue, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 0K6, Canadian Liver Foundation of MB Chapter, Box 1583, Lac du Bonnet, MB R0E 1A0 or the Arthritis Society of MB, 1465 Buffalo Pl#100A, Winnipeg, MB R3T 1L8.
A private family Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
