Gertrude Black Obituary

Gertrude Annie Black

Our dear mother, grandmother (NAN)  and great grandmother, Gerty passed away December 4th, 2019 in the Lions Prairie Manor which was her home for the past several years.

Mom grew up during the Great Depression in the Waskada area and went out to work at a very young age.  She continued to work in various occupations including being a seamstress at the Fashion Shop in Dauphin, MB.  Mom was  employed at Goodhands Drugstore in Dauphin for 4 hrs until she discovered she couldn’t be home for her children at lunch time!! From there she went on to work for Andy Newton’s Grocery store as a cashier and finally Safeway where she began her career and later transferred to Portage la Prairie where she retired after 25 years of service.  Mom loved her little home which she lived for 37 years.

Gerty loved to cook and was famous for her “infamous” recipes.  She was known  for her wonderful biscuits and home made soups as well as chicken and dumplings which she quite often and shared with her family, friends and neighbours.

Mom enjoyed bike riding (long distances), bowling, playing cards, sewing crafts, volunteering and visiting with friends.  She was a devoted member of the Royal Purple Lodge for 65 plus years of service.  She attended the Baptist Church until she could no longer hear well enough to enjoy it.  Mom enjoyed bowling in a league at one time and loved to play cards till all hours of the night!

She traveled to many places including Jamaica, Mexico, Hawaii, and several cruises and the Maritimes.  She had many adventures and had a great sense of humour to go along with them.  She was loved by all who knew her and will be missed.

She leaves behind her children; daughter  Shirley and husband Al Mazur of Canmore, AB, son Terry and daughter in law Grace of Morden, MB, her 6 grandchildren: Kevin Mazur, Darrin Mazur, Alison Elmer (Mazur) Shaun Mazur, Chancy Kruger and Wraylynn Black and 5 great grandchildren.  Her youngest sister Lavinia  Batryn of Mission, BC. And numerous nieces and nephews.

Gerty's family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of the Lions Prairie Manor for the wonderful care Mom received over the past number of years.

Safe in the arms of Jesus

A private family interment will be held at a later date.
