Hubert Juergens passed away peacefully on December 22, 2015 at Douglas Campbell Lodge in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba at the age of 96.
A celebration of his life will take place at the Omega Funeral Home on Sunday, January 17th, 2016 at 1:30 PM. The service will terminate at the chapel.
Hubert leaves behind his sister, Josefa in Germany, sister-in-laws Maria (Neil Graham) in Calgary, Hedwig (widow of Alfons Willems) in Belgium, Theresia (Johannes Benning) in Germany, and many nieces, nephews and friends across Canada and Europe. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Regina in July 2010. He was also predeceased by his sisters Lena, Maria, Greta, Lisbeth, Karola, and brother Karl. He leaves us with many wonderful memories and will be greatly missed.
Hubert was born in Steinheim, Germany on November 19, 1919. He served as a cook in the German army before being captured in North Africa. He spent five years as a POW in Manitoba, Alberta, and England before returning to Germany to obtain his master baker papers. He returned to Manitoba to start a new life and was followed by his fiancée, Regina. They were married in Little Britain in 1952 and settled in Portage la Prairie. Hubert worked as a baker at Pragnal Bakery before moving to the Manitoba Developmental Centre in 1969. At MDC, he made countless buns and other goodies for 26 years before retiring in 1985.
Hubert took great joy in telling stories and was a generous and entertaining host, often found enjoying a fine cigar and cognac in his youth. His family and history were very important to him and he and Regina traveled extensively to spend time with their family in Canada and Europe.
Hubert’s family would like to express their deepest appreciation to friends Betty and Ken Morrison and Bonnie and Darren Van den Bussche for their friendship, caring, and support and to the wonderful staff at Douglas Campbell Lodge who cared for Hubert with care and compassion.
