Janice Kathleen Thomas

     Janice Kathleen Thomas entered into rest on March 9, 2023.  Jan was born in Russell, Manitoba to Hartley and Lilian McDonald, on March 4, 1940.  As a military family, they moved  often before finally settling in the Portage la Prairie area. 

     On April 22, 1961 Jan married Lynal Thomas in Portage la Prairie.  Jan became a Registered Nurse in 1961 through the training program at the Miseracordia Health Center in Winnipeg.  She spent many years working, including time as an emergency room night nurse in Portage, as well as the St. Amant Centre in Winnipeg, and finally the Betel Personal Care Home in Selkirk.  She was one of the initial First Responders of that program during its pilot trial in the Elie area where she and Lynal had been raising their family.

     Being widowed in 1983, Janice moved to Winnipeg while she continued to work at the St. Amant center.  After meeting her partner Dan Bolianaz, they built a new home together on a small acreage around Lockport.  Together they enjoyed the outdoor life and their cabin at the lake.  They later moved to Bird’s Hill.  As life often does, getting older took its toll.   Dan went to a care home in Winnipeg and Jan moved into an apartment up the street.  After Dan’s passing, and her care needs become too much to be on her own, Jan moved into the Lion’s Prairie Manor in Portage which allowed her to be closer to her family.

     Jan is survived by her three sons; Micheal (Sally), Christopher, Dan (Teri), grand-daughters Katelyn and Victoria, and great-grandson Wyatt, her sister Lorraine and her cousin Jeanette.

     The Family would like to thank the care givers  of the Lion’s Prairie Manor for their care and kindness during her time there.  The family would like to also give special thanks to the staff at the Portage hospital for their support and kindness during the final days.
