            On Friday, December 11, 2015 at the Health Sciences Centre, Jemima Cook (Cookie), of Portage la Prairie, MB, passed away at the age of 76 years.

            Memorial service will be held in the chapel of the Lion’s Prairie Manor on Tuesday, December 15, 2015 at 10:30 AM with the Reverend John Zondag officiating.        Interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery.

            Jemima was born March 17, 1939 at Fisher River, MB. As a child she developed polio and spent several years at the Shriner’s Hospital in Winnipeg. She then became a resident of the Manitoba Developmental Centre and resided there until she moved into the community in 1970. She made her home with Walter and Eleanor Samels. Jemima worked as a domestic helper for various Portage families. In 1976 she was able to enter into independent living and became a helpful citizen of Portage la Prairie.

Jemima was an active supporter of the Portage Terriers and held a season’s ticket for many years. As well as hockey she enjoyed playing bingo at the Centennial Hall, the Army & Navy and the Portage Bingo Hall. She also enjoyed 5 pin bowling and going to summer camp at Camp Woodlands. Her outgoing personality endeared her to many Portage residents as well as hockey fans and players alike. She enjoyed traveling with Eleanor and her friend Margo Tupper to Cuba, Los Vegas, Hawaii and many other tourist destinations.

            Jemima was predeceased by her parents, 2 sisters and 2 brothers. She will be sadly missed by her many friends and especially her special friends Eleanor Samels and her family Cheryl & Wayne Mault, the Dobbin family and Heather McLaren.

            Should friends so desire, donations in memory of Jemima may be made to the Lions Prairie Manor Foundation Inc., 24 – 9th St S.E., Portage la Prairie, MB, R1N 3V4, or to a charity of your choice.

            The dedication and care given to Jemima during her stay at the Lions Prairie Manor is very much appreciated.
