Leona Enns Obituary

Leona Dorothy Enns

On March 14, 2024 after a 15 year struggle with Alzheimer’s, Leona Enns passed away at Lions Prairie Manor, at the age of 93 years.  Leona had resided there for the last 12 years.

Leona was born in Rosetown, SK where she grew up on a farm with her five siblings who have all predeceased her, along with her husband Menno Enns.  After graduating high school Leona attended St. Paul’s Hospital Nursing Program with her sister Helen, where they both became Registered Nurses.  Leona was a generous person whose entire life was spent nursing and caring for others.

Leona attended Canadian Mennonite Bible College in 1957 and met the love of her life Menno Enns. Leona and Menno married in 1958 and had three children; Gwen, Bryon and Karen.  In 1970 the family moved to Portage la Prairie and Leona worked as a nurse at Lions Prairie Manor.  In 1981 the family moved to St. Francois Xavier and Leona continued working as a nurse in Winnipeg at Seven Oaks Hospital, Maples Personal Care Home as well as home care.

When Leona retired, she volunteered at Grace Hospital and the Portage MCC Store.  Menno and Leona attended Charleswood Mennonite Church. Leona lived in St. Francois Xavier for 32 years and enjoyed gardening, crocheting, knitting, cooking, baking, trying new recipes and visiting with family and friends. At one time Leona had over 100 plant in her home.

Leona had a very vibrant and outgoing personality. She loved to laugh and play jokes on people.  Her two food groups were chocolate and ice-cream. Cleanliness was important to her, and she was even known to wash raisins with dish soap!

Sadly, at the age of 77 years she began experiencing signs of Alzheimer’s. Life was never the same for Leona. She moved to Lions Prairie Manor in 2013 and resided there until her passing.  While in the manor she received excellent care from the Parkside staff and some of the staff who cared for her had also worked along side her in the 70’s.  A special thanks from the family to all who cared for Leona.

A late spring or early summer service will be announced at a later date.
