On August 11, 2015, at the Portage District General Hospital, Mabel left us after a long illness, with her granddaughter by her side.
Mabel was predeceased by her husband Harold; infant son Melvin; son-in-law Ray Seaman; parents Sydney & Margaret Purkess; siblings Margaret & Hugh Palen, Annie & Tom Hyde, Edna & John Geigor (Count Sfreddo), Ina & Archie Fagg, Tom & Edith Purkess; and by Harold’s parents William & Myrtle Hodgins; and his siblings Hilda & Charlie Wilcher and Earl & Margaret Hodgins (Clarence Denser).
Mabel is survived by her daughter Judy Seaman; grandson Devin; granddaughter Dianne (Ryan); great grandchildren Hannah, Connor, Addy, Ryder and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mabel was born on March 8, 1921, the fourth child to Sydney and Margaret Purkess. She was raised in the Southfield district of Manitoba and married Harold Hodgins in 1951. They farmed at Pratt, Manitoba from the time of their marriage until Harold’s passing in 1973. Mabel then moved to Austin where she lived for several years while working at JJ’s restaurant. In 2000, she moved to Portage to be closer to her family and enjoyed 15 years as a resident of Oddfellow’s Towers.
Memorial service was held in the chapel of the Omega Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 19, 2015 with Sandra Bodnarchuk officiating. Congregational hymns were “How Great Thou Art” and “Beyond the Sunset” with Beryl Henders playing the piano. Urn Bearer was Dianne Seaman. Hannah Seaman was the flower bearer and Connor Seaman was the picture bearer. Private family interment will be held at a later date.
