Mary Domes Obituary

Mary Ellen (McCann) Domes

Mary Domes was born in 1923 to Tom and Carrie McCann in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.  She grew up in Saskatoon, Vancouver, and Moose Jaw.  Her only brother, Daniel, serving in the RCAF, was shot down over the North Sea in 1942.  In 1946, Mary graduated from the University of Saskatchewan as President of her class with a B.Sc. in Nursing.  Her first job was with the Saskatchewan Department of Public Health, as a Public Health Nurse.  She was notorious for volunteering for tough assignments that included working with First Nations communities in the far north, travelling by canoe in the summer, and driving a bombardier in the winter.

In 1951 she met Art Domes while on assignment at a Youth Training School at Kenosee, SK. The attraction was instantaneous and they were married on July 5, 1952.  They lived on a Verwood, SK farm in the summer and in Saskatoon for the winter where Mary worked as a Nursing Instructor while Art completed his degree in Agriculture.  Mary and Art raised four children: Daniel, David, Trish and Carey. In the early years they lived in Kindersley SK. and then moved to Portage la Prairie, MB in 1967 where Art worked as an Ag. Rep. until his retirement.

Mary loved Portage la Prairie and while raising her family was an avid curler and bridge player, spending many hours at a bridge table with friends.  She loved attending services at Trinity United Church and was a long-time member of the United Church Ladies Unit C.  Mary loved camping and fishing with her family.  She also enjoyed crafts like ceramics and needlepoint. Mary and Art had many great winters at Venture Out in Mesa, Arizona.  Spending time with her family was Mary's greatest joy.

Mary is survived by her husband of 68 years - Art Domes, her son Dan Domes (Alice) and their children; David (Sarah) and Karl, her son David Domes (Laurie) and their children; Krystyna and Daniel,  her daughter Trish Perchak (Randy) and their son Cody Perchak (Lindsey) and great-granddaughter Peyton, and their daughter Rebecca Mathieu (Shawn ) and great-grandchildren Hyde and Sasha, her daughter Carey Halmrast (Keith) and their son Tyler Halmrast, their daughter Megan Halmrast (Moe) and great-granddaughters Darius and Rayanne and their daughter Alex Halmrast and great-granddaughter Elizabeth.

Mary was predeceased by her daughter Carey Halmrast and her son-in-law Randy Perchak.

The family extends their sincere thanks to the compassionate staff at Lions Prairie Manor where Mary spent the last year.
