Mary Isabelle Petkau
With great sadness we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Mary Petkau on January 7th, 2021.
Predeceased by her husband Abram and son Tony, Mary will be greatly missed by her children; Phyllis (Dan) Page of Oakbank, Darlene (Terry) Simpson of Courtenay, BC, Edward (Jackie) Petkau of Powerview, and daughter-in-law Brenda Petkau of Edmonton, AB.
Also left to mourn the loss are 10 grandchildren; Neil (Kim) Williams, Steven (Debbie) Williams, Caroline and Anthony Simpson, Trista and Braden DeMedeiros, Slade Petkau, Melissa (Albert) Green, Justin Petkau (Meghan), Kelsey Petkau and 15 great grandchildren.
Mary married Abram Petkau and together they raised their 4 children in Bagot, Manitoba. Mary was an expert at home cooking, baking (her homemade bread and buns were delicious), caring for a 1/4 acre garden, canning, quilting and an expert seamstress. She was a hard worker and was always up for a challenge. There was nothing Mary could not do.
Mary loved hosting family gatherings and entertaining. Everyone who knocked on her door were welcomed in and could not leave until they had a homemade meal. She enjoyed camping, fishing, and was a member of Bagot UCW, Bagot Community Club and Women's Bowling league. She was known as Mom by many including the children she provided child care for in Bagot. Her son's neighbours, her grandson's neighbours, friends of her adult children, even her doctors and complete strangers called her Mom. She had unlimited love in caring for others. Mary radiated joy and zest for life, she was kind, loving and accepting of all. Mary had a deep faith and was selfless in her desire to serve the Lord and others.
Mary and Abram travelled in their retirement. When he passed away, Mary continued to travel by herself to Vancouver, Vancouver Island, with her son Edward to Mexico and Cuba, and with her daughters Darlene to the South Pacific and Phyllis to Arizona.
In February 2012, Mary left Bagot to live in Winnipeg, with her grandson Neil and family while recovering from heart surgery. She later moved in with her son Edward and family in Powerview and enjoyed her continued independance. All throughout this time she would make regular visits back to her home in Bagot, enjoying her time in the country. The last two years she moved to Oakbank to be near her daughter Phyllis. The care and support provided by Springfield Place and Kin Place Personal Care Home is greatly appreciated by the family.
Donations in memory of Mary may be made to a charity of one's choice or as Mary believed, "help others every chance you get and always give more than you take".
Mary will be forever missed and always in our hearts.
Bridge of Love
There is a bridge of memory
from earth to heaven above.
It keeps you always near us
It is called the bridge of love.
May you always walk in sunshine
And God's love around you flow
for happiness you gave us
no one will ever know.
It broke our hearts to lose you
but you did not go alone
for part of us went with you
the day God called you home.
Due to covid restrictions a private service will be held with interment at Hillside Cemetery.
