Russell James Nelson
Peacefully, on November 17th, 2019, Russell James Nelson passed away at Douglas Campbell Lodge, Portage la Prairie. Russ was born Nov. 12th, 1933 in Ogema Saskatchewan. He was predeceased by his parents Roland and Kate Nelson, brothers Ken & Dave and sister Freda.
Russ is survived by his children; Roger Nelson (Milton, ON) , Bonnie-Ann Geertsema (Gary) (Bradford, ON), Brenda-Kim Chambers (Brampton, ON) and Amanda McIntyre (Portage la Prairie, Man). Grandchildren; Michael (Carly), Shaun, Cameron, Tyler, Myla, along with great-grandchild Breanna.
Russ served with the RCAF and retired there in Portage la Prairie as a fire fighter. He was stationed in Zweibrucken Germany, Longueille, Quebec and Portage la Prairie. He loved his town of Portage and always referred to it as "God's country". He served many years as a volunteer with the Army Navy, and the Legion. Russ suffered from PTSD in his later years, and then was diagnosed with dementia and lastly cancer.
Thanks especially to the wonderful nurses and staff at Douglas Campbell Lodge. You made his final place a home and we are forever grateful. Thanks to Dr. Rice for his compassion. On his journey to health and proper care during his last few years, he was also fortunate to stay at Salem in Winkler, and was given amazing comforting care. As a result of all these health care providers, Dad was back to himself - witty, story telling, thankful and always polite. He appreciated the simple things like watching the school buses, the birds, squirrels, a good cup of coffee and a visit from a friend.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, November 20th, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at Hillside Cemetery in the Veterans Memorial section of Hillside Memorial. (newer part of Hillside Cemetery)
Rest in peace Dad.
