Sophie Dudar Obituary

Sophie Amanda (nee Trohubiak) Dudar

It is with sadness and broken hearts, we announce the passing of our precious Mother on May 17, 2021 in her 101st year at the Portage & District General Hospital.  Mom was predeceased by her husband, Metro (Matt) in 2003, her son Harry in 2007, her parents and all her siblings.

Mom was loved dearly and cherished by her children and their families; Adeline (Wayne), Lawrence (Sharon), and Sonjia (Jim), daughter-in-law Lois; grandchildren; Jodi (Angelo), Andrew (Corey) & Tara, Danny (Marge) & Darwin (Angie), Shawn, Keri (John) & Kristine, Robert & Stephanie (Jason). Great-grandmother to Matthew (Terry-Lynn) & Lucas, Joey & Aidan, Tyee, and Cammie.  Great great-grandma to Isabella & Parker.  She was a loving sister to her ten sisters and one brother (all deceased) and a caring Aunt to her many nieces and nephews.

She was born in Fishing River, MB to her parents John and Katherine on March 9, 1920.  The farm was her home until she met and married our father on June 23, 1937.  Our parents began their life together on the family homestead in Fishing River, MB.  Mom and Dad worked hard on the farm, having fields of crops and animals for their livelihood for 13 years.  In 1950, they moved to Portage la Prairie for a better life for their four children.

Our parents loved to entertain and socialize with family and friends.  While living on the farm, they attended many old-time country dances.  They continued to enjoy dancing at many social functions here at the church hall.  During the early years in Portage, they played card games regularly with a small group of friends.

Mom was a creative and resourceful person.  She sewed, embroidered, crocheted, gardened, cooked, baked, canned and was handy with a paintbrush, too.  All of us enjoyed many wonderful meals in her kitchen.  As a true Ukrainian woman, she always had perogies in the freezer, food in the fridge and food on the table.  She really enjoyed baking and cooking for all of us - birthdays and all the holidays.

Our Mom had a long and successful career as an Avon representative and many of her customers in the community became her friends too.  She was deeply devoted to her Catholic faith and was an active parish member of the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Assumption as well as the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League since 1950.  She really loved working with all the ladies for many caterings of banquets, wedding, funerals and fund-raising in the Centennial Hall.

Our family wishes to express our sincere thanks to Douglas Campbell Lodge for their care and compassion and for enriching her life and her spirits.  Thank you to Dr. Quesada for over-seeing her health care throughout the years and more recently, to Dr. Proctor and all physicians and nurses at the hospital for their compassionate care.

Dear Mother:  You will always be remembered for your kind, gentle, caring nature and for your dedication to our family.  You and our Dad were always very interested to hear about all of us and our children and relatives who were away from Portage.  We will love you, we will miss you terribly, and we are so very grateful to have had you in our lives.  May God bless you always, Mom!  Vichnaya Pamyat.

To all friends of our family:  The comfort you extended to our grieving family will never be forgotten. It made a difficult time easier to bear. Special thanks to Reverend Father Michael Tkachuk and Omega Funeral Home for all your assistance.

A come & go visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 26th from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Omega Funeral Home, 83 Royal Road S., Portage la Prairie.  Covid protocol will be in place.  A private funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 27, 2021 at Omega Funeral Home.  Interment at Hillside to follow.

Should friends so desire donations would be greatly appreciated at the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Assumption, 620 1st St. NW, Portage la Prairie, MB  R1N 1Z7 or to the charity of one’s choice.
