Dennis Orville Race
Dennis, much loved brother of Gene Race, left us on May 11, 2020. He was predeceased by his loving parents, Dal and Theresa. A resident of the Manitoba Developmental Centre for many years, he was able to pass peacefully near the people and family who knew and cared for him.
He will be remembered by friends and family for many endearing qualities; his alter egos, Santa Claus at Christmas time and a Johnny Cash loving cowboy for most of the rest of the year; his love of cookies and other goodies; his fishing skills and amazing ability to estimate the size of a good catch; his love of socializing and participating in the fun of the day; his pure enjoyment in making music with a group. He was rarely without a harmonica to express his pleasure with a little tune.
Dennis had the good fortune to be a loving uncle to Judith Anne, John and Katherine. He in turn was much loved by them and their children. Christmas shopping with Katherine usually ended with their giggly return and Dennis wearing a new Santa hat. Shopping with Judith Anne was spent in making choices...Dennis learned to choose well. Visits from John were accompanied by unwrapping a new jacket or sport shirt or receiving a cool hat.
Time spent at the cottages, in Minaki with his parents or Kenora with his brother and family, allowed for fishing, boating, and even having a swim to a neighbour, always with a life jacket of course.
The highlight for Dennis at Portage la Prairie was time spent at Sandy Haven Camp. He loved the crafts, the fishing, and the thoughtfulness of the staff who cooked the fish. Dennis appreciated participating in many activities at M.D.C. He claimed to be a good bowler and was always up for a trip to the Threshermen's Reunion & Stampede.
Dennis will be missed. His Sunday phone calls to his “brudder” will be no more. But Oh, what a legacy of unconditional love he left to all of us. The family wishes to express it's appreciation to the staff at M.D.C. for their compassionate and reliable care. His final years have been happy and secure in the knowledge that they were always there for Dennis.
A private interment will be held at the family plot at Green Acres Cemetery, Winnipeg, MB.
