Mavis "Joan" Howard

      It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of their dear mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Joan, on Apr 21, 2020 at Third Crossing Manor, at the age of 84 years.  Joan was predeceased by her loving husband Ted and infant daughter Marie, as well as her parents and 5 siblings. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters Jean Maxwell (Gordon) and Susan Cooper (Bruce).  Forever loved by her grandchildren; Thomas Maxwell (Emily), James Maxwell (Anna), Brianne Maxwell (Chris), Erin Madill (Trent), Eric Cooper (Allison) and Ethan Cooper (Brandi). Also, great grand-children, Riley, Noah, Presley, Nathan, Ben, Morgan, Jaxon and Emily.

       Joan was born in Devon, England on Feb. 29, 1936, the youngest of 6 children.  After graduating as an R.N., she married Ted on Aug 31, 1957. They immediately immigrated to Canada, eventually settling in Portage. Many memorable summer holidays were spent camping with the girls, riding with Ted on his motorcycle and wilderness canoeing.

       Joan was a member of St Mary’s Anglican Church, involved for many years with the ACW, Altar Guild and the Thrift Shop. She was a beautiful knitter, an avid crossword puzzler and spent many happy hours playing board games and cards with her grandkids. Her green thumb was evident, as she will be remembered for her beautiful flower gardens and the garden tours during her time with the Portage Horticultural Society.

       The family would sincerely like to thank the staff at Portage General Hospital Extended Care and especially the dedicated staff at Third Crossing Manor for their exceptional care of Mum during her time with them.

       A graveside service will be held at a later date. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Central Plains Cancer Services, 318 Saskatchewan Ave. E., Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 0K8.
