Robin Gilbert Bagnall
Sadly, we announce the passing of Robin Bagnall on January 22, 2024, peacefully in his sleep. Robin had been dealing with health issues which caused him some discomfort, so now he is at rest. Robin grew up on the family farm south of Sidney, Manitoba where he received his elementary education in the rural school of Arizona and high school in Sidney.
At the age of seventeen, Robin joined the Canadian Air Force where he served as a radar technician in various locations in Canada and Europe. After ten years in the air force, Robin resumed his education at the University of Winnipeg and University of Manitoba, obtaining bachelor's degrees in Arts and Education.
Robin found work with the Manitoba Government and while there obtained his Master's degree in economics. He then worked as a mining economist for the Department of Mines and Natural Resources for the rest of his working career.
Robin was an accomplished athlete in two sports – fastball and golf. In fastball, he was a hard-throwing southpaw pitcher. While still a teenager, Robin was a starting pitcher for the local men’s fastball team. Wherever he went, if there was a fastball team, Robin ended up as the pitcher. In his thirties, Robin immersed himself in golf. He quickly brought his handicap down to single digits and played on the local senior golf team. One golfing highlight was winning the Senior Putter league where Robin started the semi-final game with five successive birdies. After five holes, Robin was five under par, and he shot a 70 in that memorable game.
Robin leaves to mourn his passing one brother, Herb, two sisters, Helen and Dianne, and several nieces and nephews. Robin particularly appreciated the regular visits of nephew Kevin and his wife Mary, who brought him favorite food at home and in the hospital. He also loved to have lively conversations around politics and world events with his family and friends.
Cremation has taken place. At Robin's request, his remains will be interred in the family plot in the Austin cemetery. A graveside observance will be held this summer with family and friends to celebrate Robin's life.
