The New Manitoba Legislation
For any reputable funeral home, the new legislation will only be a slight modification to what we do now. Some of the highlights included in the legislation are:
Detailed billing – so consumers know what is included in pricing. This is to stop any misleading advertising of prices or lost leaders. We at Omega do not advertise prices. Pricing is done upon request due to the fact that different services have different prices. People need to compare services as well as prices.
Grace period – the consumer has 24 hours to cancel any contract with the funeral home. This grace period is to counter any high pressure sales as some of the larger companies have commissioned sales people. We at Omega are not commissioned, and we stress that any arrangements can be changed in a reasonable time frame.
Introducing the Board of Administration – as many people do not know, the funeral profession is governed by the Board of Administration under the Funeral Directors & Embalmers Act. This board rules on disputes, and governs the funeral profession in Manitoba. With the new legislation, funeral homes must give to each family a pamphlet explaining the role of the board and the rights of the consumers.
We at the Omega Funeral Home understand that when a death occurs, some families tend to become disorientated and don’t know which way to turn. We strive to help them make educated decisions and allow them the freedom of choice. Whether it is a traditional service with visitation or an immediate cremation with no service, our staff is willing to explain all costs the family will incur and explain in detail all options available.
