Gladys Marie Coates
Gladys Marie Valley was born on January 16, 1913 on the family homestead in Oak Lake Beach Resort area. Her parents, Edward Edmond Valley and Maude M. Valley nee Houde, immigrated from the U.S.A. in 1912 to homestead in southern Manitoba. Their oldest son, August “Babe”, was born in Kandiyohi County, Minnesota in 1909. Gladys’ youngest sister, Vivian Joy, was born in Beresford, MB in 1922 which completed this wonderful, adventurous and hard-working family.
Gladys lived from the time of the steam engines to the era of cell phones. She was more amazed at cell phones than the steam engine though as Gladys could not believe such a “skinny thing” could hold so much information. Gladys endured many hard years on the homestead farm and years later, on our family farm in Newton Siding, MB, but it only made her stronger and more determined to live almost 105 years. Gladys took great pride to always have an abundance of flowers blooming and gardens bountiful each season on the farm. Her greatest accomplishment was being foster parents, along with Dad, for many children over the decades. The children, who listened to her strong but nurturing lessons, grew up to be happy, compassionate and productive people throughout their lives.
Gladys was predeceased by her father, Edward, in 1975; her brother, Babe, in 1977; her mother, Maude, in 1983; her husband, Orville, in 1986; her grandson, Jamie, in 2003; her oldest son, Brian, in 2009 and her oldest daughter, Marlene, in 2016.
Gladys will be forever missed, loved and remembered by her daughter, Cindy (Robert), and grandchildren, Jackson, Jakota and Ryen; her son, Bob (Sheila), and grandson, Gregory; her daughter-in-law, Karen and grandson, Jeffrey; her grandson Todd; her grand-daughter, Kelly (Layne) and great-grandchildren, Jacey, Kieran, Kennedy and Aiden; and Leonard and Judy Essay and their families.
A graveside service will be held at the Oakville Cemetery in the summer of 2018 with further details to be posted on Omega Funeral Home’s website. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to P.A.W.S. or charity of one’s choice.
